Joplin sits mostly in Jasper County, with its south end reaching into Newton County, and it was incorporated in 1873 as a lead and zinc mining town. Murphysburg, just west of downtown, has 185 historic buildings, mostly Queen Anne and Craftsman houses built between about 1880 and 1965. The May 2011 tornado cut across south Joplin and destroyed thousands of homes, and many of those blocks are now lined with houses built since. In the older houses, gaps around old pipes and under worn doors let mice and brown recluse spiders in. Newer homes still have small openings around dryer vents and where pipes and wires come through the walls.

Shoal Creek runs along the city's south end, past Wildcat Park and over Grand Falls, the largest waterfall in Missouri that flows all year. At Wildcat Park, Silver Creek joins Shoal Creek between shady woods and chert glades, dry clearings of bare rock and prairie plants. Joplin Creek runs through downtown and meets Turkey Creek on the north side, where the Turkey Creek Trail follows the water. The last frost usually comes in mid-April and the first in late October. That gives ticks and mosquitoes a long season along these creeks and wooded lots.

Common questions

Pest Control FAQs for Joplin Residents

Do you service all of Joplin?

Yes. RIDD covers all of Joplin, including zip codes 64801 and 64804, on both the Jasper County and Newton County sides of the city. Pricing and services are the same across the entire city.

Do newer homes in Joplin's rebuilt neighborhoods still get pests?

Yes. Houses built in south Joplin since the 2011 tornado have fewer cracks than Murphysburg's older homes, but a door that doesn't close tight or a torn window screen still lets mice and spiders in. Ants also trail in along the base of the house from the yard.

Is pricing the same in Joplin as in RIDD's other markets?

Yes. RIDD's Joplin branch charges the same rates as every other RIDD market. Pest 4 starts at $49/month, Pest 6 at $69/month, and RIDD Package 4 at $89/month. No travel fees regardless of your address, and every plan includes our 100% satisfaction guarantee, backed by free re-services.

Do Joplin homes get fire ants?

Not as an established pest. No Missouri county is under the federal fire ant quarantine, and MU Extension notes the ants can't survive the cold winters here. The ants Joplin homes see most are odorous house ants and carpenter ants, both covered under Ant Control.
