Cockroach Control
Cockroach Control for Detroit Metro Homes.
Cockroaches are fast, resilient, and a real health concern. RIDD identifies the species, targets the infestation, and gets them out for good.
The problem
Why Cockroaches Are a Serious Pest
Cockroaches contaminate food and surfaces with bacteria, trigger asthma and allergy flare-ups, and reproduce fast enough to turn a small problem into a large infestation within weeks. They're also nocturnal and secretive, so if you're seeing roaches in the open during the day, you likely have a larger population hiding in your walls and cabinets.
Michigan homes deal with several roach species, and each one calls for a different approach. German cockroaches breed indoors year-round and are the hardest to clear, which is why correct identification matters before any product is applied.
The solution
How RIDD Treats for Cockroaches
Treatment starts with identification. German roaches need a fundamentally different approach than other species: spraying them scatters the colony and makes them harder to eliminate, so we use targeted gel baiting and insect growth regulators. For American and Oriental roaches, we use perimeter and crack-and-crevice treatments and address the moisture and entry points drawing them in.
German cockroach infestations are their own challenge. If you're dealing with German roaches specifically, we handle those through our dedicated German Roach Control service, a specialty treatment priced separately from the general plans.
Local species
Common Cockroaches in the Detroit Metro Area
A few cockroach species turn up in Michigan homes, and they don't all mean the same thing. Correct identification decides the treatment.
-
American Cockroaches
American cockroaches are the largest roach you'll see indoors, often more than an inch and a half long and reddish-brown with a pale band behind the head. They prefer damp, dark spaces like basements, floor drains, and utility rooms, and usually enter through drains, foundation gaps, and utility penetrations rather than breeding throughout the house.
-
Oriental Cockroaches
Oriental cockroaches, often called water bugs, are dark brown to nearly black and thrive in cool, damp spaces. They turn up in basements, crawl spaces, and around floor drains, move more slowly than other roaches, and are a reliable sign of a moisture problem somewhere in the home.
-
Pennsylvania Wood Roaches
Pennsylvania wood roaches live outdoors in wooded parts of Michigan and feed on decaying leaves and wood, not your kitchen. Males fly toward lights in late spring and early summer and sometimes wander inside, but they cannot breed indoors and die within a few days. They are harmless and the roach most often mistaken for an indoor infestation.
-
Brown-Banded Cockroaches
Brown-banded cockroaches are small, with light bands across the wings, and prefer the warm, dry, upper areas of a home: near appliance motors, electronics, and high on walls. They are less common in Michigan than the other roaches but can establish indoors when conditions suit them.

Common questions
Cockroach Control FAQs
What's the difference between German roaches and regular roaches?
German roaches are smaller, faster, and very hard to eliminate without professional baiting. They live almost entirely indoors and reproduce rapidly. Other species, like American or Oriental roaches, usually come in from outside and can be controlled with perimeter and barrier treatments. Telling them apart matters for choosing the right treatment.
I only saw one roach. Do I have an infestation?
Possibly. Cockroaches are nocturnal and stay hidden, so seeing one during the day can mean the population is large enough to push individuals into the open. The exception is the Pennsylvania wood roach, an outdoor species that wanders in by accident and cannot breed indoors. We recommend an inspection to confirm what you're dealing with.
Can I treat for cockroaches myself?
Store-bought sprays are largely ineffective against German roaches and only marginally effective against other species. They may kill the roaches you see but won't reach the ones hidden in walls and cabinets. Professional treatment is significantly more effective, especially for German roaches.
Are cockroaches dangerous?
Yes. Cockroach droppings, saliva, and shed skins contain allergens that can trigger asthma attacks, especially in children. They also carry bacteria on their bodies that can contaminate food and food-preparation surfaces and cause food poisoning.
