Wasp & Hornet Control

Wasp & Hornet Nest Removal in Detroit Metro.

A wasp nest on your property is a stinging hazard for your whole family. RIDD removes active nests and treats for stinging insects before they become a bigger problem.

The problem

Why Wasp and Hornet Nests Need to Be Addressed Quickly

Wasps and hornets become significantly more aggressive as summer progresses and colony populations grow. A nest that seemed manageable in June can house several thousand workers by late summer. Unlike bees, wasps and hornets can sting multiple times, and for people with allergies, a single sting can be dangerous.

Nests around the eaves, soffits, deck railings, and rooflines of Detroit metro homes are extremely common. Michigan's warm months create ideal nesting conditions, and while a colony never reuses an old nest, a good nesting spot tends to draw a new colony back the next year.

The solution

How RIDD Handles Wasp and Hornet Nests

We treat active nests with targeted products that eliminate the colony and apply residual treatments to nesting surfaces to prevent rebuilding. We do not recommend attempting nest removal on your own, especially for hornets or large wasp colonies. Disturbing an active nest without proper equipment can trigger a mass defensive response.

We also treat eaves, soffits, and other common nesting areas as part of our general pest control visits, which helps prevent nests from establishing in the first place.

Common questions

Wasp & Hornet FAQs

Is it safe to remove a wasp nest myself?

It can be, for very small nests with low activity. For anything larger or in a difficult spot, whether inside a wall, underground, or high on a structure, we strongly recommend calling a professional. Disturbing an active colony without the right equipment and protective gear can result in serious stings.

When is the best time to treat a wasp nest?

Early in the season when colonies are small, or early in the morning or late evening when wasps are less active. We time our treatments accordingly so the colony is hit when the most workers are in the nest.

Do empty nests attract new wasps?

Not the same colony. Wasps don't reuse their own nests, and the workers die off each fall. But the same location is often chosen by a new colony the following year, so removing old nests and treating the surface discourages it.

Are murder hornets in Michigan?

No. The northern giant hornet, the insect the headlines called the murder hornet, was only ever found in Washington State, never in Michigan, and it was declared eradicated from the United States in late 2024. The large stinging insects you see here are paper wasps, yellowjackets, bald-faced hornets, or European hornets.

Will wasp control disturb my bees?

We specifically target stinging pest species and do not treat honeybee colonies. If you have a honeybee swarm or hive, we can help identify it, but we recommend contacting a local beekeeper for removal.
